The update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, which got under way in September 2018, will guide the direction of particle-physics and related fields to the mid-2020s and beyond. It comes at an important moment for the field, as decisions loom about what major project comes after the LHC. A major effort in weighing up prospects for colliders, detectors and numerous other programmes in Europe and beyond is underway, and recommendations from the European Strategy Group are expected in May 2020.
