CERN becomes UN observer

On 14 December, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to allow CERN to participate in the work of the General Assembly and to attend its sessions as an observer. With this new status, the laboratory can promote the essential role of basic science in development.

In a meeting with UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, on 17 December, CERN’s director-general, Rolf Heuer, pledged that CERN was willing to contribute actively to the UN’s efforts to promote science, in particular UNESCO’s initiative “Science for sustainable development”.
