Final VLT telescope observes first light

1 December 2000

This autumn saw a double milestone for the European Southern Observatories’ Very Large
Telescope (VLT) interferometer at the Paranal observatory, Chile. The fourth and final 8.2 m
telescope of the VLT array saw first light and the 168 m long interferometric tunnel was
inaugurated following the installation of the first delay line. The remaining two lines will be
installed by February, and the full interferometer should see first light soon afterwards.
