The 13th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2024)

On behalf of the organizing committee, we are pleased to welcome you to Beijing, China, for the 13th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2024) between September 9th and 13th 2024. IBIC Series bring together the world community of experts in instrumentation for particle accelerators, to explore the physics and engineering challenges of beam diagnostics and measurement techniques for charged particle beams. The 3.5 days conference includes tutorials on selected topics, invited and selected talks, as well as poster sessions.

IBIC2024 is held by Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), which is China’s biggest laboratory for the study of particle physics. BEPCII and CSNS, two large scale facilities are operating, HEPS, a fourth generation light source is under construction in IHEP. As part of the conference, a tour of the HEPS construction site or BEPCII tunnel is organized.

Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), center of politics, culture, transport, tourism and international communication of China, is a fast-growing, dynamic metropolis, attracts foreign businesses and visitors, and maintains a firm grip on its rich cultural heritage.

7th Workshop for Energy for Sustainable Science at Research Infrastructures

Event description

In the current decade, after contrasted indications of dwindling and instable energy resources, energy cost rises and severe evidences of climate change, the sustainability of technical infrastructures has been confirmed as an unavoidable demand. New medium and large dimension research infrastructures are forced to face this challenging scenario.

Extreme performance operation and cutting-edge technologies often lead to high power consumption. The development of next generation research and technological infrastructures and the upgrade of existing ones demand new concepts in terms of sustainability, affecting both to new technological concepts and reconsidering the operation of the facilities.

Besides, the clear increase of carbon-free, renewable energy sources, energy-efficient systems, more advanced energy storage integration and smart grids can reduce strain on the energy supply. But this cannot be an excuse for delaying the transition to sustainable infrastructures. In this regard, collaboration among scientists, engineers, environmental experts and scientific policy makers is crucial for devising long-term strategies for sustainable research infrastructure.

Sustainable development and operation of research infrastructures does not limit to energy efficiency considerations; it also encompasses circular economy concepts and a proper life cycle of materials and components, concluding with a responsible management of wastes. Embracing transformative changes towards sustainability means progress and innovation. Research facilities must take a leading position in environmental consciousness and the pursuit of efficient energy solutions, inspiring other sectors.

Renewable energy sources offer hope for a greener future, including solar, wind, and geothermal technologies. Energy-efficient systems and smart grids can mitigate power demand and reduce strain on traditional energy grids. Integrating energy storage and management systems is essential for a stable power supply.

The main goal of this event is to identify the challenges, technical and strategical, to develop and implement sustainable solutions at research infrastructures. This includes sharing experiences on new energy-efficient technologies, energy management at research infrastructures, review how the energy sustainability is faced on the current research projects, analyze life cycle, and discuss about future aims and trends, among other topics. Specific interest will be paid to involve pre-doctoral students into the workshop discussions, to promote the involvement of the young research staff on the event topics.

To stimulate exchanges and foster contacts and cooperation among the participants, the format of the event has been selected to be in-presence, although speakers from non European institutions will be exceptionally allowed to participate on-line.

CIEMAT, in collaboration with CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), the ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility), DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), PSI (the Paul Scherrer Institut), ESS (The European Spallation Source) and ERF (The European Association of National Research Facilities) will host the Seventh Workshop on Energy for Sustainable Science at Research Infrastructures Facilities in Madrid on 25-27 November 2024, as a continuation of a series of events hosted by ESS (2011), CERN (2013), DESY (2015), ELI-NP (2017), PSI (2019) and ESRF (2022).

Higgs Hunting 2023

The origin of Electroweak symmetry breaking is one of the central topics of research in fundamental physics. The discovery of a Higgs boson at CERN on July 4th, 2012, following a hunt that spanned several decades and multiple colliders, changed the landscape of these investigations and provided key evidence for the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism of mass generation through the spontaneous breaking of Electroweak symmetry.

Almost ten years later, the hunt goes on several fronts, in particular for:

  • New physics through precision studies of the properties of the Higgs boson : in particular its mass, spin and couplings to other Standard Model particles.
  • New production and decay modes, in particular in processes involving multiple Higgs bosons which provide key insight into the shape of the Higgs potential.
  • New Higgs-like states and signals for physics beyond the Standard Model.

The 13th workshop of the « Higgs Hunting » series organized on September 11-13th, 2023 will present an overview of these topics, focusing in particular on new developments in the LHC Run-2 analyses, detailed studies of Higgs boson properties and possible deviations from Standard Model predictions. Highlights will also include a first look at LHC Run-3 analyses, prospects from studies at future colliders, and recent theoretical developments.

The workshop will be held in person in Orsay and Paris to continue the Higgs Hunting tradition of lively discussions during and after the sessions. Remote participation will also be made possible for those unable to attend in person. No registration fees are asked for remote participation..

TAUP 2023

The International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics is a biennial Conference started in 1989. The purpose of TAUP2023 is to bring together theorists and experimentalists working in Astroparticle Physics, to review and discuss the status and prospects of the field.

Back to the Swamp

The Swampland program gives general constraints on effective theories to be compatible with quantum gravity, therefore defining the Landscape of consistent theories. The program is quickly gaining command of the fundamental understanding of open questions in particle physics and cosmology, ranging from the hierarchy of fundamental scales in nature, to the origin and final fate of the universe.

The aim of this workshop is to gather leading experts in the field, to discuss the recent developments in our understanding of the Swampland and its implications for cosmology and particle physics.

This is the third edition of the previous very successful related workshops Vistas over the Swampland and Navigating the Swampland.

9th International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics (QNP2022)

The 9th International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics will be held at FSU in Tallahassee, FL, USA, on 5-9 September, 2022. This conference follows the series of meetings previously held in Adelaide, Julich, Bloomington, Madrid, Beijing, Palaiseau, Valparaiso, and Tsukuba. Experimentalists and theorists will discuss recent developments in the field of hadron and nuclear physics.

International Conference on Kaon Physics 2022 (KAON2022)

The 2022 edition of the International Conference on Kaon Physics will be hosted by Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, from September 13th to 16th, 2022. This conference continues the KAON series which was originated in 1988 and offers opportunities for theorists and experimentalists from the high-energy physics community to discuss all aspects of kaon physics.

Sixth Workshop on Energy for Sustainable Science at Research Infrastructures

Dwindling resources together with rising energy costs and climate change are all challenges faced by the next generation of large-scale research infrastructures. Indeed, the enhanced performance of proposed new facilities often comes with anticipated increased power consumption. Sustainable developments at research infrastructures will rely on mid- and long-term strategies for reliable, affordable and carbon-neutral energy supplies.

The ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) is pleased to host the Sixth Workshop on Energy for Sustainable Science at Research Infrastructures on 29th and 30th September 2022 in Grenoble, France in collaboration with:

  • CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research)
  • ESS (European Spallation Source)
  • DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron)
  • PSI (Paul Scherrer Institut)
  • ERF (European Association of National Research Facilities)

The workshop is supported by I.FAST (Innovation Fostering in Accelerator Science and Technology).  It will be held in person on the EPS Campus site (sanitary crisis permitting).

ESSRI 2022 will bring together international sustainability experts, stakeholders and representatives from research facilities and future research infrastructure projects worldwide, with the purpose of identifying the challenges, best practices and policies to develop and implement sustainable solutions at research infrastructures. This includes the increase of energy efficiencies, energy system optimizations, storage and savings, implementation and management issues as well as the review of challenges represented by potential future technological solutions and the tools for effective collaboration.

The workshop series ‘Energy for Sustainable Science at Research Infrastructures’ is a biannual event organised by CERN, ERF and ESS in various locations. Exceptionally, the sixth edition of the series has been selected as one of the key events of ‘Grenoble: European Green Capital 2022‘ to enhance Grenoble’s engagement in sustainability.
