Purpose:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. The Manufacturing Team of SNS Source Development and Engineering Group initiates and oversees procurement and construction of neutron source related components. The team manages an on-site machine shop and interacts with subcontracted vendors to supply and produce major source-system components including the inner reflector plug, the proton beam window, and the target module. The primary role of the mechanical and manufacturing engineer is to manage the production of neutron source components ensuring high quality and on-time deliveries. In addition, the mechanical and manufacturing engineer will perform engineering tasks within the Source Development and Engineering Group including design, analysis, and other engineering functions as needed.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
* Develop and maintain suppliers for neutron source related components
* Act as Technical Project Officer (TPO) to oversee all technical aspects of subcontracts for neutron source related component manufacturing
* Manage neutron source component manufacturing schedules for on-time delivery
* Coordinate response to vendor non-conformances or systemic failures so that they are proactively addressed and resolved at the appropriate level
* Create 3-D models and mechanical drawings
* Oversee, document, and improve special processes used to manufacture neutron source components
* Coordinate manufacturing tasks with design engineers, quality specialists, and procurement staff
* Maintain all required documentation of neutron source manufacturing components
* Review drawings and specifications for neutron source related components * Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements and is accountable for safety assessment and improvement in all work areas.
* Expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct by holding yourself and others to the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards in a manner that fosters mutual respect and enhances the reputation of the individual researcher, his/her colleagues, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in its mission to address the Department of Energy's and the nation's scientific and technical challenges.
* Some domestic or international travel may be required

Authority/Approval Levels:
Establishes procedures and work instructions. Issues and approves vendor submittals (non-conformance reports, deviation requests, certifications, etc), design packages, specifications, and design change notices. Issues and approves final data packages for neutron source related components

Basic Qualifications:
* BS in mechanical engineering or engineering science
* Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical drawings, quality assurance, manufacturing techniques
* Knowledge of machine design practice
* Proficiency in the creation of 3-D CAD models and mechanical drawings
* Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems independently form solutions
* Ability to technically analyze and communicate engineering problems
* Excellent communication skills
* Previous experience prioritizing and managing a high volume of work demands

Preferred Qualifications:
* 3 years of experience in applicable mechanical engineering design and manufacturing
* Working level proficiency in Creo
* Familiarity with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

Work Direction and Interface:
Reports to the Manufacturing Team Leader. Communicates with manufacturing team members and the wider staff within the Source Development and Engineering Group. Also communicates with procurement staff, quality specialists, and outside vendors. Contributes generously to efforts led by other SDE team leaders. Coordinates activities with personnel at all levels within ISD and other divisions in SNS.

Measures of Effectiveness:
* Successfully controls high quality manufacturing processes from design through manufacture
* Successfully manages schedule and budget of neutron source related component deliveries in support of SNS needs
* Successfully interacts with NTD engineers to develop ideas into workable engineering solutions
* Demonstrates technical competence
