The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out more than 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. The RF Engineer will support operation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of the RF systems that accelerate and manipulate particle beams in the SNS accelerator complex and execution of the Proton Power Upgrade Project.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
* Provide accelerator operations support including occasional call-in to achieve neutron production with >90% availability.
* Contribute to the development and execution of the Proton Power Upgrade Project to double the beam power capability of the SNS accelerator.
* Evaluate and upgrade the existing RF systems to improve performance and mitigate obsolescence.
* Develop expertise in the theory and operation of klystrons and participate in the klystron stewardship program.
* Operate and improve test stands including the RF Test Facility, Beam Test Facility, and Ion Source Test Stand.
* Specify, develop and procure high power RF components and related subsystems.
* Plan and manage maintenance and upgrade work.
* Develop documentation and procedures for RF equipment and ancillary systems.
* Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
* Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values, ethics, and diversity. Authority/Approval Levels: Provides work direction to technicians, research mechanics, subcontractors, and vendors within guidelines established by the Electrical and RF Systems Group Leader. Initiates procurement of materials and services.

Qualifications Required
Basic Qualifications:
* B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering
* 2 or more years of relevant engineering experience
* Experience with RF concepts and measurement techniques
* Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Preferred Qualifications:
* M.S. or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering
* Education concentration in electromagnetics and radio-frequency theory and techniques.
* Expertise in the design and analysis of RF structures for the acceleration and manipulation of charged particle beams.
* Expertise in the design of RF devices and transmission line components.
* Expertise in computer programming using languages such as C++ and Labview.
* Expertise using design tools such as CST Microwave Studio.
* Demonstrated success in working in a team environment.

Work Directions and Interfaces
* Reports to the High-Power RF Team Leader.
* Interfaces with Electrical and RF Systems Group members, NScD staff, professional peers from non-ORNL institutions, ORNL business services, vendors and visitors.
* Represents group activities and interests within ORNL and at professional conferences, workshops, and collaboration meetings.

Measures of Effectiveness
* Success in the fulfillment of all major duties and responsibilities.
* Success as measured by the ORNL Employee Performance Management process.
* Safe execution of all responsibilities in accordance with ORNL ES&H requirements.
