POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Linac Coherent Light Source-II Project is a major expansion of the world’s first x-ray free-electron laser at SLAC. This project will construct a 4 GeV continuous-wave (CW) superconducting electron linear accelerator in the existing 2-Mile Linac facility.

LCLS-II has an employment opportunity available for a Technical Director with technical and managerial qualifications to provide oversight of system integration, interface definition as well as procurement and construction strategies. Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):

•Reviewing & approving design requirements to ensure they are complete and documented

•Reviewing & approving changes to subsystem designs to ensure they are properly integrated into the overall facility design

•Identifying and resolving conflicts between systems at their interfaces

•Prioritizing the LCLS-II Scope-Add list and planning implementation of potential scope-additions after they have been properly planned and that the full extent of the add is understood via the DCR process

•Working with LCLS and AD leadership to ensure that the Project will meet the needs of the facility

•Organizing Readiness Reviews needed for system turn on and commissioning

•Managing the Project Office Technical Integration group; the Physics Team Lead, Systems Engineering Manager, Systems Coordination lead, Controls Integration lead, and Radiation Safety Architect.

JOB PURPOSE:

Direct and control the activities of an organization or functional area in the research, development, and/or support of research or technical projects, programs, facilities, or field sites.

CORE DUTIES*:

•Provide strategic direction and develop long range plans that typically establish objectives and overall direction for a major function or center.

•Identify, clarify, and resolve highly complex issues with university-wide impact and substantial significance, which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment.

•Manage the activities of a large-scale and/or diverse technical operation,

•Create strategic long-range plans of considerable complexity and scope.

•Ensure state-of-the-art research is adequately funded, staffed, equipped, and housed.

•Exercise authority to commit and allocate substantial resources.

•Manage adoption of emerging technologies and the development of new methods and approaches.

•Identify priorities for research initiatives, training, and outreach.

•Collaborate with university leaders on research project decisions.

•Supervise other staff, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to providing instruction on complex techniques and direction on projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Masters or PhD degree in physics or engineering plus ten years of relevant experience in design, construction, commissioning and operation of major accelerator facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•Demonstrated experience leading and managing a large organization of technical staff through subordinate managers.

•Demonstrated experience leading large, complex projects or programs.

•Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
