Come to work at CERN

At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature.

Call for candidates for the position of director of APC (Astroparticles physics and Cosmology) laboratory

APC, the laboratory of Astroparticles physics and Cosmology in Paris is a laboratory of CNRS (IN2P3, INSU, INP) and of the University Paris-Diderot, the CEA and the Observatoire de Paris. APC counts about 75 staff scientists (fulltime researchers and University staff), about sixty PhD students and post-docs and 65 technical and administrative support staff (engineers and technicians). The scientific activities of the laboratory are focused on four major fields: astroparticles physics, cosmology, gravitation and neutrino physics (http://www.apc.univ-paris7.fr/APC_CS/en). Besides the experimental or observational aspects, theoretical aspects of these fields are also addressed.

The research groups of APC are strongly engaged in international collaborations working on large research infrastructures and on space programs. The technical departments of APC (mechanics, electronics, experimental technics and computing) allow for the scientist to participate in the design, prototyping and construction phase of the experiments and in their data treatment.

The future direction of APC should have an outstanding scientific profile, experience in leadership positions in the domain or in related research fields and show a strong ambition for the laboratory. It is expected that he or she will work full-time on this mission, in the aim of developing, together with the parent organisations, the excellence of the scientific and technical activities, as well as teaching and outreach activities. The appointment is for five years.

Applications and any related question should be addressed to Ursula Bassler (ursula.bassler@in2p3.fr) before November 12, 2017. The applicant should join a curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation. The applications will be transmitted to a Search Committee representing the parent organisations and the personnel of the laboratory. The committee is in charge of advising the parent organisations that will make the final selection.

Following a first evaluation of the applications, the Search committee will audition the preselected candidates during the month of January 2018. The selected candidate will be appointed during the first semester of 2018.
