Come to work at CERN

At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature.

Head of Accelerator Operations

About this job

Company & location
MAX IV, Operations, Sweden
Last updated
Aug 9, 2017

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.

The core of the MAX IV facility are three sources of synchrotron radiation: a 3 GeV electron storage that provides utrahigh brightness X rays , a 1.5 GeV ring providing soft X rays and UV radiation and a 3 GeV linear accelerator that is serves as an injector to the two storage rings as well as generates electron bunches that drive the production of ultra-short X ray pulses. MAX IV is a pioneer in a number of developments in accelerator physics and engineering and hosts, in particular, the first ultralow emittance storage ring based on a multi-bend achromat, a design which is currently being followed by many other laboratories worldwide.
We are now looking for Head of Accelerator Operations.

To lead the MAX IV Accelerator operations group, making sure the goals of accelerator operation hours, performance and availability are reached. In order to do this, the Head of Accelerator Operations (HAO) counts with a number of accelerator operators and accelerator operator assistants (being hired) that work in shifts, initially covering Monday to Sunday 08:00 to 24:00, but soon to cover 24/7. It is expected that the number of staff in the operations group will increase and the HAO will be closely involved with selecting, hiring and training new staff. Additionally, on-call technical support will be available for a number of subsystems. Moreover, the HAO will work in close collaboration with and have support by the Accelerator System and Sub-system owners with whom he/she needs to maintain a constant dialogue. A frequent interaction is also expected with the beamline office, coordinating communications towards the beamlines. The operations group leader is also responsible for defining the working schedule for the accelerator operators and is the line manager for those employees.

This will be a permanent position as "Research Engineer" with a renewable 3 year assignment as Head of Accelerator Operations.

  • An Engineering or Physics degree, several years of experience in managing operations of large scientific or industrial facilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to lead, inspire and develop people.
  • Excellent ability to communicate in English, both written and oral.
  • High multitasking capacity and ability to stay calm and focused under pressure.
  • Specific knowledge of accelerator facilities or their subsystems is a major plus but is not an absolute requirement.
  • Goal oriented

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
