Research Support Specialist III (Mechanical Engineer)

The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) has an immediate opening for two mechanical engineers to contribute to the planning, development, design, and fabrication of highly specialized equipment for particle accelerators. These individuals will collaborate with accelerator physicists and engineers to develop concepts for highly complex new devices, requiring innovative designs and critical analysis of sophisticated technical systems. Translate concepts into detailed engineering drawings, carry out design and analysis, and identify potential problems and solutions. Manage the fabrication of devices/equipment, which typically includes multiple, complex designs being integrated into an effective system. Supervise the construction, assembly, installation, and commissioning of respective devices and equipment. Present detailed project results at meetings and respond to questions concerning design and operation. Assist in the preparation of research papers, reports, and articles for publication.

Requirements: A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience, plus 3-5 years design experience in mechanical engineering or design is required. Advanced facility with commercial 3-D CAD programs, specifically AutoDesk Inventor, and FEA-based modeling and analysis programs (e.g., ANSYS) is essential. Background in UHV equipment design and UHV practices is essential. Demonstrated understanding of precision machining practices such as turning, milling, NC machine tools, and complex machine setups required. Candidates must work efficiently within tight schedules and have demonstrated the ability to manage multiple, overlapping, complex projects.

Preferred Experience: Candidates will have extensive design engineering experience in particle accelerator systems or similar fields (aerospace / semiconductors). Experience designing with specialty materials such as 316LN stainless steel, Niobium, Titanium, PEEK, is useful. Familiarity with cryogenic equipment is helpful. Some experience in computer scripting and/or programming languages will be needed.
