Oppositely wound Helmholtz coils produce an axially symmetric quadrupole field to which an electric multipole field is added. These produce trapping potentials for positive and negative particles, as well as for low-field seeking antihydrogen atoms. After de-excitation to the ground state, a beam of spin-polarized antihydrogen atoms emerges.
